Substitute Volunteers

Red Coat Volunteers assist the Information Desk and visitors in the main and outpatient lobbies. They also escort admissions to their appropriate units and deliver daily newspapers and schedules. In addition, they provide directions at the elevators and in the Outpatient Registration area.

Maple Corner Gift Shoppe Volunteers manage, staff and operate the Gift Shop, providing an important service to our patients, visitors and hospital personnel. The profits from the gift shop are used to enhance patient care at the hospital. The gift shop is a project of the Goshen General Hospital Auxiliary.

Information Desk Volunteers help direct visitors to specific areas and generally serve as receptionists. The Red Coat and Information Desk volunteers work as a team in this area.

Patient Services Volunteers are responsible for delivery of patient mail and flowers, as well as the care of patient flowers and plants.

Hospice Care Partners provide emotional, physical and spiritual support to terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers are part of the interdisciplinary team which provides care in the home as long as the patient and family desire.

Surgery Waiting Area Receptionist Volunteers serve as liaisons between surgery, recovery and families waiting for surgical patients.

Special Services Volunteers provide a variety of assistance to various hospital departments, including temporary assistance and long-term clerical assistance, according to the department’s request. Some Special Services Volunteers assist in Imaging, Medical Records, Human Resources and Finance.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Volunteers are used in several capacities. In the Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Program, volunteers assist heart patients in a controlled exercise program. Volunteers also provide education, fellowship and support to both patients and their families. Registered Nurses are used for the outpatient morning walk program held at Goshen College. A monthly newsletter is prepared for the Cardiac Club by a volunteer. Volunteers also assist the dietitian with the cardiac cooking class held quarterly.

Children’s Tour Volunteers are specially trained to conduct tours for children in nursery school through 6th grade. The volunteer and the classroom teacher plan a special tour that reinforces classroom study and familiarizes the children with the hospital.

Emergency Room Volunteers have very special training within this highly sensitive area, in addition to general hospital orientation. These volunteers serve as a communication liaison between the families of emergency patients and the Emergency Room physicians and nursing personnel. They strive to alleviate the anxiety of families and to provide other immediate services as appropriate.

Library Volunteers help distribute magazines throughout hospital waiting rooms.

On Call Chaplains & Spiritual Care Visitors are screened, trained and scheduled by the IU Health Goshen Hospital Chaplain. These volunteers provide spiritual care and emotional support to patients and their families.

Substitute Volunteers train in one or more volunteer areas and fill in for regularly scheduled volunteers who are unable to cover their shift. This provides great flexibility for the individual who does not wish to be tied down to a specific day or time.

IU Health Goshen Center For Cancer Care features a progressive, holistic approach that is focused on both emotional and physical aspects of care and healing. Volunteer opportunities in the Goshen Center For Cancer Care include: Medical/Surgical Exam Room, Hostess/Patient & Family, Infusion Room and Radiation Oncology.

Pet Partners Volunteers provide pet-visitation to hospital patients on a weekly basis. All pets are certified through the Delta Society. Volunteers and pets provide caring support and socialization for patients on all hospital units.
